Notion is a powerful tool that helps you organize and display content, but it doesn’t natively provide a vertical divider line feature. If you’re working on a long page or showcasing multiple sections of content, you might want a divider to clearly separate different parts. In this case, you can easily create a vertical divider effect using Notion's quote block. Follow along with my demo and click the next step to learn how to do it—let's get started!
Step 1: Insert a Quote Block
Start by typing /quote
on a blank line and selecting it. This will insert a quote block, which is typically used for quoting text, but we’ll use it to create a divider line instead.
Step 2: Change the Color of the Quote Block
The quote block will default to displaying a gray line. Click on the six small dots next to the block, then choose the "Color" option to change the line’s color. Although it says "Text Color," it actually changes the color of the line, so don’t worry about that. Pick a color that fits your page’s style.
Step 3: Move the Quote Block
Next, click and hold the six small dots to drag the quote block to the desired location. You’ll see a gray divider line between the blocks on the same row. When you hover your mouse over the line, it will appear, making it easier to adjust the spacing.
Step 4: Adjust the Spacing
Adjust the spacing between the divider line and other blocks until you're happy with the layout. You can drag the line to fine-tune the distance. Keep in mind, the gray line only shows up when your mouse is near it, so take your time with this step.
Step 5: Extend the Divider Line
If you want to extend the divider line, click into the quote block to enter edit mode. Then, press Shift + Enter
to add a blank line. Repeat this step until the divider line is the length you want. This will also remove the default text in the quote block: "Empty quote."
Inserting a Horizontal Divider Line
If you prefer to use a horizontal divider, Notion offers an easy option for that as well. Just type /divider
and select it, and you’ll instantly get a default gray horizontal line. Note that the thickness and color of this line are fixed, with no customization options available.
By following these simple steps, you can organize your content more effectively and make your Notion page cleaner and more visually appealing. Whether you use a vertical or horizontal line, dividers help create a well-structured and readable layout!
