How to create an outline from a shape in figma

12/17/2024

When you're designing in Figma, there may be times when you want to take a simple shape and transform its stroke into a fully editable outline. Whether you're refining a logo, creating intricate designs, or simply want more control over your shapes, turning a stroke into an outline is an essential skill. This tutorial will guide you through the process step by step.

To access Figma, please click here.

1. Click to select the shape.

Start by selecting the shape you want to work with. This could be any vector shape you've already created in your design.

2. In the left menu, click the "+" next to 'Stroke' to add a stroke.

In the right properties panel, locate the 'Stroke' section and click the "+" to add a stroke to your shape. This will give the shape a border, which you can later convert into an outline.

3. Under 'Position', select 'Outside'.

Now, under the 'Position' dropdown in the 'Stroke' section, select "Outside" to ensure that the stroke appears on the outer edge of your shape, rather than inside or along the center.

4. Right-click on the shape again.

Once the stroke is set, right-click on the shape to open the context menu.

5. Select 'Outline Stroke' to complete the process.

From the context menu, choose "Outline Stroke." This action will convert the stroke into a separate shape that you can manipulate and customize as needed.

Pro Tip:
You can always adjust the color and thickness of the outline by modifying the settings in the 'Stroke' menu. This gives you full flexibility in styling your outlines.

Quick Shortcut:
Instead of navigating through the menu, you can quickly access "Outline Stroke" using the shortcut Ctrl + Alt + O (Windows) or Cmd + Option + O (Mac).
